Da Hong Pao, 'Big Red Robe'
Oolong tea, China

Flavour: wood, walnut, dried berries, spice
Da Hong Pao comes from the well-known mountainous area of Wuji Rock, in Fujian, China. It is one of the famous ‘rock oolongs’. The leaves for this tea can only be plucked from a few select tea bushes that are thought to have lived for hundreds of years. Da Hong Pao means ‘Big Red Robe’, named after red robes that were draped over specific tea bushes said to have cured an Emperor’s ill mother in the 1300s. Da Hong Pao’s large twisted leaves produce warm notes of wood, walnut and spice along with dried red berries. June 2021 harvest.

Preparation: Steep for 4 minutes at 90°. Two infusions.

Food pairing: Hard cheese, muesli, granola, duck, teriyaki chicken and rice.

Sizes: Da Hong Pao comes in four sizes: a 3 gram single serve, then 20g, 50g and 100g pouches. Our leaves can all be steeped at least twice (often more), so while the 3g pouch is a single serve (150 mls - a standard tea cup size), it will give you two cups if you steep the leaves twice
